Employment in Ghana: What You Should Know

Contracts of Employment

For contracts exceeding six months, employers must issue a written agreement within two months of start. This must outline the job description, wages, working hours, notice periods, leave entitlements, and social security.

Working Hours

The legal maximum is 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. Employees are entitled to two consecutive days of rest each week.

Probation Period

There is no statutory limit on probation periods, but they are typically outlined in collective agreements or contracts.

Leave Entitlements

  • Annual Leave: 15 days of paid vacation per year after 12 months of continuous service.
  • Public Holidays: 11 recognised national holidays.
  • Sick Leave: No fixed provision, but time off is granted based on medical certification and paid per company policy.
  • Maternity Leave: 12 weeks paid at full salary, with an additional 2 weeks for multiple births.
  • Paternity Leave: Not currently mandated by law.

Overtime and Compensation

No fixed legal rate, but common practice is:

  • 150% of regular pay for overtime on weekdays
  • 200% for work on rest days or holidays

Minimum Wage

As of the latest update, the national minimum wage is GHS 9.68 per day. This is subject to annual revision by the National Tripartite Committee.

Termination and Notice

Written notice or pay in lieu is required:

  • 7 days for weekly contracts
  • 2 weeks for contracts under 3 years
  • 1 month for contracts over 3 years

No statutory severance for individual dismissals, but redundancy compensation applies in restructuring or closures, subject to negotiation with unions or employee representatives.
